What Is Protonitazene?

Protonitazene or 5-nitro-2-benzylbenzimidazole  was created in the late 1950s as an opioid analgesic and is a member of the 2-benzylbenzimidazole class. The C4 position of the benzyl moiety is substituted by a methoxy or an ethoxy group, respectively, making it a metonitazene and etonitazene homologue. The substitution of the benzyl moiety at the C4 position with an n-propoxy or an isopropoxy group, respectively, makes protonitazene an isomer of isotonitazene.
